Bullying02:04

Bullying

A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is bullying.
Aggression01:47

Aggression

Humans engage in aggression when they seek to cause harm or pain to another person. Aggression takes two forms depending on one’s motives: hostile or instrumental. Hostile aggression is motivated by feelings of anger with intent to cause pain; a fight in a bar with a stranger is an example of hostile aggression. In contrast, instrumental aggression is motivated by achieving a goal and does not necessarily involve intent to cause pain (Berkowitz, 1993); a contract killer who murders for hire...
Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture01:27

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...
Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...
Robbers Cave04:49

Robbers Cave

During the 1950s, the landmark Robbers Cave experiment demonstrated that when groups must compete with one another, intergroup conflict, hostility, and even violence may result. At the Oklahoman summer camp, two troops of boys—termed the Rattlers and the Eagles—took part in a week-long tournament. During this time, their negativity culminated in derogatory name-calling, fistfights, and even vandalism and destruction of property. However, this work also revealed that such tension could be...
Bystander Effect02:09

Bystander Effect

The discussion of bullying highlights the problem of witnesses not intervening to help a victim. This is a common occurrence, as the following well-publicized event demonstrates. In 1964, in Queens, New York, a 19-year-old woman named Kitty Genovese was attacked by a person with a knife near the back entrance to her apartment building and again in the hallway inside her apartment building. When the attack occurred, she screamed for help numerous times and eventually died from her stab wounds.

Area of Science:

  • Adolescent Health
  • Criminology
  • Traffic Safety

Background:

  • Limited data exists on adolescent road rage experiences.
  • Previous research focused primarily on adult road rage.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of road rage victimization among adolescents.
  • To identify demographic factors associated with adolescent road rage victimization.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the 2005 Ontario Student Drug Use Survey (n=7726).
  • Employed logistic regression to analyze demographic correlates (gender, region, license status, grade, marks) of three road rage victimization measures.

Main Results:

  • Over half (53.2%) of students experienced verbal road rage (shouts, curses, gestures).
  • 8.9% were threatened with vehicle damage or personal injury.
  • 6.2% experienced attempted or actual vehicle damage or injury.
  • Demographic factors like region, driver's license status, grade, gender, and marks were significantly related to different forms of victimization.

Conclusions:

  • This study offers the first prevalence data on adolescent road rage victimization.
  • Milder forms of road rage are frequent among Ontario students.
  • A notable percentage of adolescents experience threats or physical/property harm due to road rage.
