Insights
This study found Streptococcus pneumoniae in 29.9% of children in Mexican day-care centers. The prevalent serotypes suggest potential benefits from the heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.
Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Infectious Diseases
- Microbiology
Background:
- Streptococcus pneumoniae is a significant cause of bacterial transmission.
- Nasopharyngeal carriage is a key factor in pneumococcal disease spread.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of asymptomatic nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae in children.
- To identify common serotypes and their antibiotic susceptibility.
Main Methods:
- Nasopharyngeal cultures were collected from 2,777 children aged 2 months to 6 years.
- Participants attended 32 day-care centers across 12 states in Mexico.
- Children resided in urban areas, with 80% attending day-care for over six hours daily.
Main Results:
- Streptococcus pneumoniae was isolated from 29.9% of the children.
- The most frequent serotypes identified were 19F (23%), 6B (15.6%), 23F (11.2%), and 6A (14.9%).
- 36% of the isolates showed susceptibility to penicillin.
Conclusions:
- The identified serotype distribution indicates potential advantages of using the heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.
- Findings highlight the importance of vaccination strategies in day-care settings.
Objective:
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of asymptomatic nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae, which is a major factor in the transmission of this bacterium.
Material And Methods:
Nasopharyngeal cultures were performed on children attending 32 day-care centers in 12 states in Mexico.
Results:
Streptococcus pneumoniae was isolated from the nasopharynx of 829 out of 2,777(29.9%) subjects aged two months to six years. All children lived in urban areas and 80% spent more than six hours daily in a day-care center. Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes most frequently identified were: 19F (23%), 6B (15.6%), 23F (11.2%) and 6A (14.9%). Thirty-six percent of the isolates were susceptible to penicillin.
Conclusions:
Serotype distribution suggests the possible benefits that could be obtained from the heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.

Sputum Studies II: Culture and Sensitivity
Sputum culture and sensitivity is a medical procedure used to diagnose bacterial infections in the respiratory tract and select the most appropriate antibiotics for treatment. This process involves analyzing sputum samples of thick and opaque secretions produced in the lungs and airways. These samples are collected from patients and then sent to the laboratory for analysis.
The test can identify various pathogens responsible for respiratory infections, including Streptococcus,...
