Summary

Gastric bypass surgery significantly lowers long-term mortality from heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. However, non-disease related deaths like accidents were higher post-surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Bariatric Surgery Outcomes
  • Obesity Management
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Gastric bypass surgery is the most common bariatric procedure in the US.
  • Limited long-term mortality data exists for gastric bypass patients compared to the general obese population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare long-term mortality rates between gastric bypass surgery patients and severely obese individuals.
  • To identify specific causes of death in both groups.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study (1984-2002) of 9,949 gastric bypass patients and 9,628 severely obese controls.
  • Matched analysis based on age, sex, and BMI.
  • Mortality data obtained from the National Death Index.

  • Overall mortality decreased by 40% in the surgery group versus controls (37.6 vs. 57.1 deaths/10,000 person-years).
  • Significant reductions in deaths from coronary artery disease (56%), diabetes (92%), and cancer (60%) were observed post-surgery.
  • Non-disease related deaths (accidents, suicide) were 58% higher in the surgery group.

Conclusions:

  • Gastric bypass surgery is associated with significantly reduced long-term mortality, especially from major diseases.
  • Increased mortality from non-disease related causes warrants further investigation and potential intervention strategies.
