Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Pharmacology
  • Internal Medicine

Background:

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a growing global health concern.
  • Effective and well-tolerated oral antidiabetic agents are crucial for T2DM management.
  • Sulfonylureas are a common class of oral hypoglycemic agents.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of gliquidone, a new sulfonylurea.
  • To assess the safety profile of gliquidone in patients with type 2 diabetes.
  • To investigate the impact of gliquidone on renal and hepatic function in specific patient subgroups.

Main Methods:

  • A three-month clinical trial involving 39 patients with type 2 diabetes.
  • Administration of gliquidone (Glurenorm) as the primary intervention.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Monitoring of glycemic control, side effects, and specific biochemical markers.
  • Main Results:

    • Gliquidone demonstrated medium-strength beta-cytotropic antidiabetic activity.
    • Only one patient (2.5%) experienced dyspepsia; no symptomatic hypoglycemia occurred.
    • Renal function indicators remained stable in patients with diabetic nephropathy.
    • Elevated gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase levels normalized in patients with concurrent hepatopathy.

    Conclusions:

    • Gliquidone is an effective and well-tolerated antidiabetic agent for type 2 diabetes.
    • The drug is safe for patients with type 2 diabetes, even those with associated nephropathy or hepatopathy.
    • Gliquidone presents a favorable option for managing type 2 diabetes, including in patients with comorbidities.
