Cognitive Therapy01:25

Cognitive Therapy

Cognitive therapy, pioneered by Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s, is a structured approach to addressing psychological distress by focusing on the influence of thoughts on emotions and behaviors. All cognitive therapies involve the basic assumption that human beings have control over their feelings, and that how individuals feel about something depends on how they think about it. Unlike psychoanalytic methods that delve into unconscious processes or humanistic approaches emphasizing...
Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...
Behavior Therapy01:22

Behavior Therapy

Behavior therapy incorporates diverse techniques rooted in classical conditioning principles to address maladaptive behaviors and anxiety disorders. These methods aim to reduce avoidance behaviors, foster adaptive coping mechanisms, and alter associations between stimuli and responses, making them effective in a wide range of therapeutic contexts.
Exposure therapy is a cornerstone of behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders. It involves systematic exposure to feared stimuli, either in real...
Binge Eating Disorders01:23

Binge Eating Disorders

Binge eating disorder is a significant mental health condition characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive food consumption within a short period, accompanied by a perceived loss of control over eating behavior. Unlike occasional overeating, binge eating disorder is marked by distressing emotions such as guilt, shame, and anxiety following binge episodes. The disorder affects individuals across different ages and backgrounds, with profound implications for physical and psychological...
Obesity01:24

Obesity

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in adipocytes...
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy01:24

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

Cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBTs) are grounded in the belief that our thoughts profoundly influence our emotions and actions. Advocates of CBT emphasize three core assumptions: first, that cognitions are identifiable and measurable; second, that they are central to psychological functioning; and third, that irrational or maladaptive beliefs can be replaced with rational and adaptive ones. This transformative approach to therapy has paved the way for specific models such as Albert Ellis's...

Summary

This cognitive behavioral therapy program effectively reduced the body mass index-standard deviation score (BMI-SDS) in overweight and obese children over one year. Parental involvement and group sessions were key components of this successful childhood obesity intervention.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Endocrinology
  • Behavioral Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Childhood obesity is a growing global health concern.
  • Effective interventions are needed to manage pediatric overweight and obesity.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) shows promise in lifestyle modification.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the 1-year outcomes of a multidisciplinary CBT program for overweight and obese children.
  • To assess the program's impact on body mass index-standard deviation score (BMI-SDS) and psychological well-being.
  • To identify factors influencing treatment adherence and success.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 73 children (aged 8-15 years) in a group-based CBT program with parental involvement.
  • Primary outcome: reduction in BMI-SDS.
  • Secondary outcomes: changes in percent overweight, self-image, and self-esteem.
  • Statistical analysis using MIXED modeling.

Main Results:

  • Participants achieved a significant 0.6 reduction in BMI-SDS (18.7% weight loss equivalent) after 1 year (P < .0001).
  • A 33% dropout rate was observed.
  • Dropouts were older, had higher baseline BMI-SDS, and showed less reduction during treatment compared to the follow-up group.

Conclusions:

  • The multidisciplinary CBT program demonstrated a positive effect on BMI-SDS in overweight and obese children at 1-year follow-up.
  • Participant characteristics, such as age and baseline BMI-SDS, may predict treatment outcomes.
  • Further research into predictors of dropout is warranted to optimize intervention strategies.
