Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels correlate with estradiol during IVF cycles. While not directly predicting IVF success, BDNF is crucial around the periovulatory period.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Endocrinology
- Neurobiology
Background:
- Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a neurotrophin recently identified in the ovary.
- Estradiol is a key hormone in the female reproductive system and IVF cycles.
Purpose of the Study:
- To measure circulating BDNF and estradiol levels during in vitro fertilization (IVF).
- To determine if BDNF levels can predict IVF outcomes.
- To investigate the relationship between BDNF and estradiol during IVF.
Main Methods:
- Blood samples were collected from 23 subjects undergoing IVF.
- BDNF and estradiol levels were measured on specific days: Day 1, Day 8, day of HCG administration, and day of oocyte retrieval.
- Correlations and between-group differences were analyzed.
Main Results:
- A positive correlation was observed between BDNF and estradiol throughout the IVF stimulation cycle.
- BDNF levels significantly increased between Day 8 and the day of HCG administration in all patients.
- No statistically significant differences in BDNF or estradiol levels were found between pregnant and non-pregnant groups.
Conclusions:
- Circulating BDNF levels do not appear to be predictive of IVF outcomes.
- BDNF is highly correlated with estradiol levels, particularly during the periovulatory period.
- BDNF plays a significant role in ovarian function during IVF treatment.
