Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection01:26

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection

The hosts' susceptibility to infection depends on several factors. The integrity of the skin and mucous membranes helps protect the body against microbial attacks. When the skin is altered, the chance of infection, limb loss, and even death increases.
The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin create...

Overview
Microbes in Beverage Production01:25

Microbes in Beverage Production

Alcoholic beverages such as wine, beer, and spirits are the products of microbial fermentation processes that transform simple sugars into ethanol and a wide array of complex flavor compounds. These transformations rely on the metabolic activities of specific yeasts and bacteria, which are selected and controlled to yield the desired beverage characteristics.Wine Fermentation and MaturationWine production begins with the crushing of grapes to release juice and pulp, forming a must that is...
Development of Immunocompetence01:22

Development of Immunocompetence

The initiation of cell-mediated immunity can be observed as early as the third month of fetal growth, with active antibody-mediated immunity following approximately one month later.
The initial cells that migrate from the fetal thymus settle within the skin and epithelial tissues lining the mouth, digestive tract, and in females, the uterus and vagina. These cells, including skin-based dendritic cells, serve as antigen-presenting cells, playing a key role in T cell activation.
Subsequent T...
Special Features of Adaptive Immunity01:20

Special Features of Adaptive Immunity

The adaptive immune system, a crucial component of the overall immune response, offers a highly specialized defense against pathogens. It involves specific cell types and features, enabling it to combat infections effectively and efficiently.
The primary cell types involved in adaptive immunity are T cells and B cells. Each type has a unique role in defending the body against pathogens. T cells are responsible for cell-mediated immunity. They identify and eliminate infected cells directly,...
Immunological Memory01:23

Immunological Memory

Immunological memory, a pivotal pillar of the adaptive immune system, is responsible for the body's ability to remember and respond more swiftly and effectively to previously encountered pathogens. This remarkable feature is what makes vaccines so effective in preventing diseases.
What is Immunological Memory?
Immunological memory is an integral function of the immune system that allows it to recognize and react more rapidly and effectively to pathogens previously encountered. This feature is...

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Nutritional Science
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Epidemiological studies suggest moderate alcohol intake correlates with reduced morbidity.
  • Intervention studies are crucial to understand the underlying mechanisms.
  • The impact of moderate beer consumption on immune function, considering gender, requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the effects of moderate beer consumption on the immune system of healthy adults.
  • To explore potential gender-specific differences in immune response to moderate beer intake.
  • To elucidate the immunomodulatory mechanisms of moderate beer consumption.

Main Methods:

  • A 30-day period of moderate beer consumption (330ml/women, 660ml/men) followed a 30-day alcohol abstinence.
  • Evaluated immune parameters included leukocyte and lymphocyte counts, T-lymphocyte subsets (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+), B lymphocytes (CD19+), and serum immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM).
  • Assessed delayed-hypersensitivity skin response (DHSR) and cytokine production (IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha).

Main Results:

  • Moderate beer intake increased CD3+ T-cells in women.
  • Serum immunoglobulin levels (IgG, IgM, IgA) and several cytokines (IL-2, IL-4, IL-10, IFN-gamma) were elevated in both genders.
  • The ratio of IFN-gamma to IL-10 decreased, indicating a shift in cytokine balance.

Conclusions:

  • Moderate beer consumption exerts an immunomodulatory effect in a healthy adult Spanish population.
  • The observed immunomodulatory effects appear more pronounced in women than in men.
  • Moderate beer intake can influence immune cell populations and cytokine profiles.
