Superior vena cava reconstruction using bovine jugular vein conduit

Glutaraldehyde-treated bovine jugular vein conduit (BJVC) shows promise for superior vena cava (SVC) reconstruction. A patient remained free of SVC obstruction symptoms for 42 months after using BJVC.

- The glutaraldehyde-treated bovine jugular vein conduit (BJVC) is a recognized xenograft for right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction.
- BJVC has not previously been utilized for superior vena cava (SVC) reconstruction.
Observation:
- A patient with SVC obstruction underwent reconstruction using BJVC in September 2003.
- The patient survived for 42 months post-procedure, remaining free of SVC obstruction symptoms.
Findings:
- Radionuclide venography confirmed graft patency.
- Minor stenosis was observed at the proximal anastomosis.
Implications:
- BJVC demonstrates potential as an alternative conduit for SVC reconstruction.
- Further investigation into BJVC for SVC reconstruction is warranted.
