Summary

This study reports two rare cases of acute leukemia coinciding with brucellosis. Simultaneous treatment for both conditions led to successful remission in both patients, with no observed reactivation.

Background:

  • Brucellosis and acute leukemia are distinct conditions that can present with overlapping symptoms like fever and cytopenias.
  • The simultaneous occurrence of brucellosis and acute leukemia has not been previously documented in medical literature.

Observation:

  • Two patients presented with concurrent brucellosis and acute leukemia, one with generalized arthralgia and pancytopenia, the other with mild leucopenia and thrombocytopenia, both experiencing fever.
  • Both patients underwent simultaneous chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and brucellosis.

Findings:

  • The first patient's fever resolved within 3 days, while the second patient experienced a subfebrile temperature for 5 days before resolution.
  • Both patients achieved complete remission of their acute leukemia and showed no signs of brucellosis reactivation during follow-up.

Implications:

  • This case series highlights the possibility of co-existing brucellosis and acute leukemia, even with similar clinical presentations.
  • Simultaneous treatment appears effective for managing both conditions, suggesting a need for considering brucellosis in leukemia patients presenting with relevant symptoms.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the interaction between these two diseases and optimize treatment strategies.
