Energy Budgets and Reproductive Strategies00:51

Energy Budgets and Reproductive Strategies

Organisms must balance energy intake with the energy required for growth, maintenance, and reproduction. These trade-offs result in a variety of survivorship and reproductive strategies, including semelparity and iteroparity. Semelparous species reproduce only once in their lifetime, often investing most available resources into that single reproductive event. Iteroparous species, by contrast, reproduce multiple times over their lifetimes, typically allocating fewer resources to any single...

Energy

The universe is composed of matter in different forms, and all forms of matter contain energy.  The different forms of energy on Earth originate from the Sun—the ultimate energy source. For instance, plants capture light energy from the Sun, and through the process of photosynthesis, convert it into chemical energy. This stored energy from plants can be harnessed in many ways. For example, eating plant products as food provides energy for our body to function, and burning wood or coal...
Work-energy Theorem01:41

Work-energy Theorem

According to Newton’s second law of motion, the sum of all the forces acting on a particle (net force) determines the rate of change in the momentum of the particle (motion). Therefore, we should consider the work done by all forces acting on a particle, or the net work, to see its effect on the particle’s motion.
The work-energy theorem equates work done by all the forces on an object to the change in its kinetic energy. The theorem can be used to calculate work done by a force when...

Energy Diagrams - I

The dynamics of a mechanical system can be easily understood by interpreting a potential energy diagram. Since energy is a scalar quantity, the interpretation of the dynamics of the system becomes even simpler.
Take the example of a skater on a parabolic ramp. The potential energy at different points along the ramp will be proportional to the height of the ramp, which varies quadratically with the horizontal position on the ramp. As the skater moves down the ramp from the highest position,...

Energy Diagrams - II

Energy diagrams are important to understand the dynamics of a system. The topology of an energy diagram helps illustrate the equilibrium points of the system.
The point in the energy diagram at which the system’s potential energy is the lowest is known as the local minima. The system tends to stay in this position indefinitely unless acted upon by a net force. The slope of the potential energy diagram at the local minima is zero, indicating that zero net force is acting on the system. The slope...
Potential-Energy Criterion for Equilibrium01:16

Potential-Energy Criterion for Equilibrium

Potential energy or potential function plays an essential role in determining the stability of a mechanical system. If a system is subjected to both gravitational and elastic forces, the potential function of the system can be expressed as the algebraic sum of gravitational and elastic potential energy. If the system is in equilibrium and is displaced by a small amount, then the work done on the system equals the negative of the change in the system's potential energy from the initial to the...

    Summary

This study re-evaluates embodied energy calculations by including energy for labor and government services. Including these factors reveals a strong link between a product's embodied energy and its dollar value in the U.S. economy.

    Area of Science:

    • Environmental Economics
    • Energy Analysis
    • Input-Output Economics

    Background:

    • Embodied energy quantifies the total energy to produce goods and services.
    • Traditional calculations often exclude energy inputs for labor and government services.
    • This exclusion stems from the assumption of independent economic production factors (land, labor, capital).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of including energy for labor and government services in embodied energy calculations.
    • To determine if including these previously omitted energy inputs strengthens the relationship between embodied energy and economic value.

    Main Methods:

    • Adapted input-output analysis to incorporate energy requirements for labor and government services.
    • Calculated embodied energies for a 92-sector U.S. economy using the revised methodology.

    Main Results:

    • Including energy for labor and government services significantly impacts embodied energy calculations.
    • A strong correlation was observed between embodied energy and dollar value when these factors were included.
    • The interdependence of economic production factors, particularly energy's role, is highlighted.

    Conclusions:

    • Standard embodied energy assessments may underestimate total energy consumption by omitting labor and government service energy.
    • The economic production factors are not independent, and energy is integral to their creation.
    • Revised embodied energy calculations provide a more accurate representation of economic value and energy intensity.
