Summary

Female ophthalmologists earned significantly less than their male counterparts in the 1990s. This study highlights gender-based income disparities in ophthalmology that warrant further investigation.

Background:

Gender disparities in physician compensation are a growing concern.
Understanding income differences within specialized fields like ophthalmology is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between provider gender and annual income among ophthalmologists.
To quantify income differences after controlling for key professional and practice variables.

Retrospective analysis of American Medical Association (AMA) physician survey data (1992-2001).
Linear regression model used to assess income differences between male and female ophthalmologists.
Adjusted for work effort, provider, and practice characteristics.

White female ophthalmologists reported fewer patient visits and worked fewer annual hours than white males.
After adjustments, female ophthalmologists earned approximately 20% less annually than males ($55,091 difference).
