Summary

Histopathologic examination revealed hepatic peribiliary cysts in a pig liver. These cysts, lined by mucin-producing epithelial cells, were separate from the bile duct.

Observation:

  • A case study of a young, apparently healthy pig with numerous hepatic peribiliary cysts is presented.
  • Macroscopically, cysts containing serous fluid were distributed throughout all liver lobes.
  • Histopathological analysis showed cysts adjacent to large bile ducts within portal tracts.

Findings:

  • The cysts were lined by a single layer of columnar, cuboidal, or flattened epithelial cells, occasionally with goblet cells.
  • Periodic acid-Schiff/alcian blue and high-iron diamine/alcian blue staining confirmed the presence of neutral, sialo-, and sulfomucins.
