Summary

Elevated serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels strongly correlate with higher peripheral blood CD34+ cell counts, indicating good stem cell mobilization for apheresis. This finding suggests pre-apheresis LDH levels can predict successful stem cell collection.

  • Statistical analysis including correlation coefficients (r) and p-values to assess relationships between LDH, PBCD34, leukocytes, and platelets.
  • Multivariate regression analysis to identify significant predictors of PBCD34.
  • Main Results:

    • A very strong positive correlation was found between serum LDH levels and PBCD34 (r=0.54; P<10(-48)).
    • Serum LDH was the only significant factor correlating with PBCD34 in multivariate analysis.
    • Elevated LDH levels were associated with significantly higher PBCD34 (median 53 vs. 11; P<0.00001), regardless of collection type (autologous r=0.54, allogeneic r=0.41).

    Conclusions:

    • Elevated serum lactate dehydrogenase is a strong and independent predictor of good stem cell mobilization.
    • Pre-apheresis LDH measurement can be a valuable tool to anticipate successful stem cell collection.
    • It is reasonable to initiate apheresis when elevated LDH levels are observed, suggesting adequate stem cell mobilization.
