  • Examine the genetic and environmental influences on the covariation between these behavior types.

Main Methods:

  • Bivariate genetic analyses were applied to parent-rated CBCL/6-18 Internalization and Externalization scores.
  • Data were collected from 398 twin pairs aged 8-17 from the Italian Twin Registry.

Main Results:

  • Covariation between Internalizing and Externalizing behaviors is primarily explained by genetic and common environmental factors.
  • Unique environmental factors had a negligible influence on the covariance.
  • Externalizing problems robustly predict co-existing Internalizing problems within a child or sibship.

Conclusions:

  • Shared genetic and environmental factors contribute to the simultaneous manifestation of Internalizing and Externalizing behaviors.
  • Findings aid in predicting individual risks for co-occurring behavioral problems in clinical settings.
