Summary

Idiopathic intussusception, a common childhood intestinal obstruction, shows a significant familial tendency. This suggests a hereditary predisposition may be an important etiological factor in many cases.

Background:

  • Intussusception is a frequent cause of intestinal obstruction in young children.
  • Its etiology is often considered incidental, with limited recognition of a genetic basis.
  • However, some cases of idiopathic intussusception exhibit a notable familial pattern.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential familial tendency in cases of idiopathic intussusception.
  • To explore hereditary predisposition as an etiological factor in childhood intussusception.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medical records for idiopathic intussusception cases (1975-2004).
  • Direct or telephone interviews with parents and grandparents to ascertain familial intussusception history.
  • Analysis of 564 patients' medical records and family histories.

Main Results:

  • A family history of intussusception was identified in 39 pedigrees, extending to third-degree relatives.
  • Familial intussusception incidence was estimated at 7.0% (1 in 14.2 cases) among 554 pedigrees.

Conclusions:
