Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Congenital Malformations
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Extralobar pulmonary sequestration (EPS) is a congenital lung malformation.
  • Typically, EPS involves lung tissue with an anomalous systemic arterial supply.
  • While usually intrathoracic, rare intra-abdominal presentations occur.

Observation:

  • A case of a 1-week-old newborn with an intra-abdominal extralobar sequestration is presented.
  • The sequestration was identified antenatally as a suprarenal mass.
  • This highlights an unusual location for this congenital anomaly.

Findings:

  • The study describes a rare intra-abdominal extralobar sequestration.
  • The mass was located in the suprarenal region.
  • Diagnostic imaging confirmed the nature of the malformation.

Implications:

  • Intra-abdominal extralobar sequestration is a rare but important differential diagnosis for suprarenal masses in neonates.
  • Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management.
  • Awareness of extralobar pulmonary sequestration in atypical locations can improve patient outcomes.
