Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate and compare the perspectives of community pharmacists and certified pharmacy technicians regarding the appropriate functions for technicians.
  • To identify areas of agreement and disagreement on the scope of pharmacy technician responsibilities.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted in Florida community pharmacies.
  • A self-administered mail questionnaire assessed attitudes towards 26 dispensing functions using a 6-point Likert scale.
  • Data from 383 pharmacists and 579 technicians were analyzed using chi-square tests and exploratory factor analyses.

Main Results:

  • Pharmacists and technicians agreed on 65% (17 of 26) of the functions, primarily related to prescription and claims processing.
  • Significant differences emerged regarding eight functions, particularly those involving patient care, with technicians advocating for a more expanded role.
  • Exploratory factor analyses revealed three common themes: current technician functions, clinical knowledge functions, and pharmacist-only functions.

Conclusions:

  • While consensus exists on fundamental dispensing tasks, a notable divergence in opinion exists concerning the expansion of technician roles into patient care.
  • Pharmacy technicians expressed a greater willingness to engage in patient-focused activities compared to pharmacists' perceptions.
  • These findings highlight potential areas for professional development and role evolution within community pharmacy practice.
