Background:

Increasing numbers of grandparents and relatives are providing care for children in the foster care system.
These kinship caregivers are a vital resource but often face significant burdens.
The child welfare system requires supportive interventions for these caregivers.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the KinNET project, a national network of support groups for kinship caregivers.
To analyze the characteristics of caregivers and children involved in the project.
To identify key lessons learned and provide recommendations for supporting kinship caregivers.

Main Methods:

The KinNET project utilized a support group model, replicating the Brookdale Foundation approach.

Data were collected from a survey of caregivers (n=102) and children (n=226).

Support groups offered kinship caregivers emotional and community support, information, and respite.
The project provided a profile of the participating caregivers and children.
Highlights from survey data were presented.

Conclusions:

Kinship caregivers are essential but require enhanced support to provide quality care.
Support groups are an effective intervention for kinship caregivers.
Recommendations are made to improve services for this population.
