Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Genetics
  • Animal Breeding
  • Dairy Science

Context:

  • Complex vertebral malformation (CVM) is a lethal autosomal recessive defect identified in the Holstein cattle breed.
  • Recent reports from Denmark highlight the emergence of CVM, necessitating a thorough understanding of its implications.
  • The prevalence of CVM carriers within nucleus breeding groups poses a substantial risk to the dairy industry.

Purpose:

  • To review the primary symptoms and significant economic impacts of CVM on the dairy industry.
  • To explicate the research progression and available testing methodologies for CVM.
  • To discuss the current status of potential CVM carriers within China's Holstein population.

Summary:

  • This review details Complex Vertebral Malformation (CVM), an inherited defect in Holstein cattle.
