Patients with bipolar disorder (BD) show impaired cortical inhibition (CI) across multiple neurophysiological measures. This study provides in vivo evidence of reduced motor cortex inhibition in BD, suggesting potential new avenues for treatment.

Main Results:

  • Patients with BD exhibited significant deficits in SICI compared to controls (P = 0.03).
  • Reduced SP duration was observed in BD patients (P = 0.03).
  • Interhemispheric inhibition (IHI) was also significantly impaired in the BD group (P = 0.02).

Conclusions:

  • The findings support the hypothesis of decreased cortical inhibition (CI) in bipolar disorder (BD).
  • These neurophysiological deficits in BD warrant further investigation.
  • Understanding these deficiencies may inform future therapeutic strategies for BD.
