Background:

Patient suicide is a significant event during psychiatry residency training.
Limited research exists on psychiatry residents' reactions to patient suicide.
Few studies have examined the support provided by training programs to residents after a patient suicide.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the current literature on psychiatry residents' reactions to patient suicide.
To examine the responses of psychiatry residency training programs to residents following a patient suicide.

Main Methods:

A literature review was conducted using Ovid Medline.
Searches covered the period from 1966 to 2006.
Keywords included "patient suicide," "residency training programs," "psychiatry residents," and "therapists-in-training."

Main Results:

A limited number of studies explore residents' experiences after patient suicide.
Only two studies examined support measures provided by U.S. psychiatry training programs.
Patient suicide is common during training, causing significant psychological stress for residents.
Residency programs lack formal training and support systems for these stressors.

Conclusions:

Further investigation into the effects of patient suicide on residents is warranted.
Implementation of formal support systems within psychiatry training programs is recommended.
