A case of superior lumbar hernia.

Background:

• A 50-year-old woman presented with a 7x8 cm soft, nontender left flank mass.
• Barium meal with follow-through study revealed herniation of the descending colon.
• Surgical findings included a 6x5 cm defect in the transversalis fascia.

Findings:

• Successful surgical repair of the superior lumbar hernia was achieved.
• The defect in the transversalis fascia was closed using mattress sutures.
• The external oblique muscle was sutured to the latissimus dorsi muscle.
