Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder01:30

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings.
Self-Regulation01:25

Self-Regulation

Self-regulation, also known as self-control, encompasses a range of cognitive and behavioral processes that allow individuals to adjust their internal states and outward actions to align with socially acceptable norms and long-term goals. It plays a fundamental role in adaptive functioning, from resisting impulsive behaviors to persisting through challenging tasks. While its benefits are widely recognized, self-regulation is not limitless. Muraven and Baumeister's theory posits that...
Binge Eating Disorders01:23

Binge Eating Disorders

Binge eating disorder is a significant mental health condition characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive food consumption within a short period, accompanied by a perceived loss of control over eating behavior. Unlike occasional overeating, binge eating disorder is marked by distressing emotions such as guilt, shame, and anxiety following binge episodes. The disorder affects individuals across different ages and backgrounds, with profound implications for physical and psychological...
Bulimia Nervosa01:30

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by a cyclical pattern of binge-and-purge eating pattern. It generally involves an episode of binge eating, followed by compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative use, or fasting, to prevent weight gain. Despite often maintaining a normal weight, individuals with bulimia are intensely preoccupied with their body image and harbor an overwhelming fear of gaining weight. This can contribute to the...
Obesity01:24

Obesity

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in adipocytes...
Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Summary

Obese children show a greater tendency towards impulsivity and attention issues compared to normal-weight children. Early screening for impulse control deficiencies in overweight youth is recommended.

Area of Science:

  • Child Psychology
  • Behavioral Science
  • Obesity Research

Background:

  • Childhood obesity is a growing concern with potential links to behavioral patterns.
  • Impulsivity is a complex construct that may differ between weight groups.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate impulsivity differences between obese and normal-weight children.
  • To explore the multidimensionality of impulsivity in pediatric populations.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the Matching Familiar Figure Test (MFFT), child interviews, and parental reports.
  • Assessed 56 overweight and 53 normal-weight children aged 10-18 years.

Main Results:

  • Overweight children exhibited more impulsive responses on the MFFT (P < .01).
  • Overweight boys reported more attention difficulties, and both genders struggled with attention shifting.
  • Overweight boys showed higher impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention symptoms via clinical interview.

Conclusions:

  • A subset of overweight children displays heightened impulsivity and an impulsivity-prone personality.
  • Screening overweight children for impulse control deficits is advised.
  • Further research is needed on gender differences, personality profiles, and links between obesity and ADHD.
