  • Chlamydia trachomatis detection was performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
  • Main Results:

    • The majority of women chose to provide a self-taken vaginal swab.
    • Self-obtained vaginal swabs demonstrated equal sensitivity and specificity compared to clinician-taken samples.
    • Self-obtained swabs showed greater sensitivity than urine tests for Chlamydia trachomatis.

    Conclusions:

    • Self-obtained vaginal swabs are a preferred method for STI testing among high-risk women in New Zealand.
    • This method is a viable and accurate alternative to clinician-collected samples for Chlamydia trachomatis detection.
    • Offering self-obtained vaginal swabs should be considered for widespread chlamydia screening programs.
