Summary

Maximal short-term ergometric tests (ET) reliably assess myocardial revascularisation efficacy post-surgery. However, positive ET results without symptoms indicate that angina alone doesn't guarantee surgical success.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Cardiovascular Surgery

Context:

  • Evaluates the efficacy of myocardial revascularisation surgery.
  • Assesses functional recovery in post-surgical cardiac patients.

Purpose:

  • To determine the reliability and safety of maximal short-term ergometric tests (ET) for assessing outcomes after myocardial revascularisation.
  • To investigate the correlation between ergometric test results, symptoms of effort angina, and overall surgical success.

Summary:

  • Ergometric tests (ET) were performed on 900 patients 30-35 days post-myocardial revascularisation surgery without medical therapy.
  • Positive ET results were observed in 21% of patients, with 5% experiencing persistent effort angina symptoms.
  • Negative ET results were seen in 62%, while 17% had inconclusive results due to insufficient heart rate.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No major complications were reported during the tests.
  • Impact:

    • Maximal short-term ET is a safe and reliable method for evaluating myocardial revascularisation efficacy and functional recovery.
    • The study highlights that a significant percentage of positive ET results (indicating ischemia) may occur without symptoms, suggesting that angina onset alone is not a definitive indicator of successful cardiosurgery.
