Area of Science:

  • Pharmacognosy
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine Processing
  • Phytochemistry

Background:

  • Cistanche tubulosa (C. tubulosa) is a valuable medicinal herb.
  • Traditional processing methods for C. tubulosa decoction pieces may not optimize active compound preservation.
  • Establishing an efficient processing method is crucial for maximizing therapeutic potential and resource sustainability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish an optimized processing method for Cistanche tubulosa decoction pieces.
  • To improve the quality and yield of active compounds in C. tubulosa.
  • To compare the optimized method with traditional processing techniques.

Main Methods:

  • An orthogonal test with four factors and three levels was employed to optimize processing parameters.
  • Key factors optimized included thickness, temperature, and enzyme inactivation time for fresh C. tubulosa.
  • The optimized method involved cutting fresh C. tubulosa into 4 mm thickness and heating at 70°C for 6 minutes for enzyme inactivation.

Main Results:

  • The optimized method yielded significantly higher concentrations of key active compounds compared to insolation and traditional drying methods.
  • Echinacoside content was 7.3 times higher than insolation and 12.8 times higher than traditional drying.
  • Verbascoside and galactitol content also showed substantial increases, with verbascoside being 6.5 and 14.9 times higher, and galactitol 7.1 and 13.2 times higher, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • The established processing method significantly improves the quality of Cistanche tubulosa decoction pieces.
  • This optimized method conserves the crude drug, protecting the source of Herba Cistanche.
  • The improved processing offers significant economic and ecological benefits.
