Anxiety: Overview01:18

Anxiety: Overview

Anxiety is a common mental disorder featuring excessive worry, fear, and apprehension, significantly affecting daily life. People with anxiety disorders experience persistent and intense anxiety, interrupting their everyday functioning.
Individuals with anxiety often experience a range of physical and emotional symptoms, including sweating, trembling, tachycardia, and disturbances in sleep patterns. These symptoms vary in intensity and frequency but are generally disruptive and distressing.
Attachment01:20

Attachment

Attachment is vital for infant development, as warm social interactions support growth and well-being. In a classic 1958 study by Harry Harlow, the significance of warmth and comfort in forming attachments was examined. Harlow separated newborn monkeys from their mothers and provided two artificial "mothers": one made of cold wire and the other covered in soft cloth. Despite the wire mother offering food, the infant monkeys preferred the comfort of the cloth mother, demonstrating that physical...
Parental Care00:55

Parental Care

Many animals exhibit parental care behavior, including feeding, grooming, and protecting young offspring. Parental care is universal in mammals and birds, which often have young that are born relatively helpless. Several species of insects and fish, as well as some amphibians, also care for their young.
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder01:27

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium.
Symptoms and Behavioral Manifestations
A spectrum of distressing symptoms characterizes PTSD. Recurrent flashbacks, where individuals involuntarily relive traumatic events, are a...
Social Anxiety Disorder01:28

Social Anxiety Disorder

Social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is characterized by an intense fear of social situations where one might face humiliation, rejection, embarrassment, or negative evaluation. This disorder leads individuals to avoid activities like casual conversations, public speaking, or seemingly simple tasks such as eating, signing documents, or swimming, in public settings. Its impact extends beyond discomfort, often significantly interfering with daily functioning and quality of life.
Development of the Oral Microbiota01:28

Development of the Oral Microbiota

The establishment of the oral microbiome begins before birth, challenging the long-held belief that the fetal oral cavity is sterile. The presence of oral microbes such as Streptococcus and Fusobacterium in amniotic fluid suggests that microbial exposure may occur in utero, potentially through translocation from the maternal oral or gastrointestinal tract. This early colonization primes the neonatal immune system and sets the stage for subsequent microbial succession. Maternal health,...

Summary

Postpartum anxiety is linked to lower breastfeeding confidence and success. Identifying anxious mothers can help prevent lactation failure and support breastfeeding.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Health
  • Maternal Mental Health
  • Lactation Science

Background:

  • Postpartum anxiety is a significant concern affecting maternal well-being.
  • Understanding factors influencing lactation success is crucial for maternal and infant health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between postpartum anxiety and key lactation outcomes.
  • To explore how anxiety impacts breastfeeding confidence, knowledge, and performance.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed state anxiety using the State Trait Anxiety Inventory in breastfeeding women.
  • Measured breastfeeding experience, knowledge, and confidence via focused questions and the Breastfeeding Confidence Scale.
  • Evaluated breastfeeding performance, including initiation, supplementation, exclusivity, and duration.

Main Results:

  • Predischarge anxiety inversely correlated with breastfeeding confidence (r = -0.27, p = 0.000).
  • High-anxiety mothers were less likely to initiate breastfeeding (53.0% vs. 65.1%) and more likely to use formula (43.9% vs. 29.1%).
  • Anxiety was associated with lower rates of exclusive breastfeeding (AOR = 0.39) and higher rates of breastfeeding termination at 1 month (AOR = 4.40).

Conclusions:

  • Postpartum anxiety is associated with diminished breastfeeding confidence and poorer lactation performance.
  • Identifying women with postpartum anxiety can aid in early intervention for lactation support.
  • Targeted interventions may help mitigate the negative impact of anxiety on breastfeeding outcomes.
