Area of Science:

  • Biomechanics
  • Orthopedics
  • Rehabilitation Engineering

Background:

  • Gait analysis is crucial for assessing locomotor pathologies.
  • Existing methods can be lab-bound and complex.
  • Objective and portable tools are needed for clinical use.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate a new portable system for gait analysis.
  • To assess the feasibility of using this system for clinical applications.
  • To evaluate the system's ability to differentiate between normal and impaired gait.

Main Methods:

  • A portable system (data logger, triaxial accelerometers, software) was developed.
  • Pelvis kinematics were measured during gait in 5 hip osteoarthritic and 15 healthy subjects.
  • Measurements were compared against a Vicon motion capture reference system.

Main Results:

  • The portable system showed high correspondence with the reference system.
  • Differences in vertical sacrum amplitude, gait cycle time, and spine vertical trajectories were minimal.
  • Impaired gait demonstrated a distorted pelvis trajectory.

Conclusions:

  • The portable system is a valid and feasible tool for gait analysis.
  • It provides objective data for discriminating normal from limping gaits.
  • The system's portability allows for easy use outside the laboratory setting.
