Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results from...
Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in situations...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I

A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.
The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...
Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric health
  • Behavioral science
  • Exercise physiology

Background:

  • Childhood obesity is a growing concern, necessitating effective interventions to promote physical activity.
  • Existing programs like the Food Dude Healthy Eating Programme utilize behavior-change principles that can be adapted for physical activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a novel intervention combining peer modeling, rewards, and pedometer feedback to boost children's physical activity.
  • To assess the intervention's effectiveness using the same behavior-change principles as the Food Dude Healthy Eating Programme.

Main Methods:

  • A quasi-experimental design involving 100 children (aged 9-11) from two primary schools in Wales.
  • The intervention group received 8 days of exposure to fictional role models ('Fit n' Fun Dudes') and rewards for increasing daily step counts by 1500.
  • Pedometer data were collected at baseline, during intervention, and at a 12-week follow-up for both experimental and control groups.

Main Results:

  • Experimental girls demonstrated significantly higher daily steps during intervention and at follow-up compared to baseline and control girls.
  • Experimental boys showed significantly increased daily steps during the intervention compared to baseline and control boys.
  • No significant differences in activity levels were observed between experimental and control boys at the 12-week follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • The peer modeling, rewards, and pedometer-feedback intervention effectively increased children's physical activity.
  • The positive impact on physical activity was sustained over 12 weeks, particularly in girls.
