Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder01:30

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings.
Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep01:24

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.

Stress and Mental Health01:30

Stress and Mental Health

Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Drug Abuse and Addiction: Pharmacological Phenomena

Drug dependence, abuse, and addiction are complex phenomena that can precipitate various abnormal states. Physical dependence refers to a state of pharmacological adaptation to a drug. This adaptation often results in tolerance—a reduced response to the drug after repeated administrations. When the drug use is abruptly stopped, withdrawal symptoms occur due to the body's need to readjust from the pharmacologically induced imbalance. However, tolerance and withdrawal symptoms do not necessarily...
Adler's Individual Psychology01:28

Adler's Individual Psychology

Alfred Adler, a prominent figure in psychology, founded the school of individual psychology. In contrast to Freud's emphasis on sexual or aggressive motives, Adler suggested that individuals are primarily motivated by their purposes and goals. He believed that people strive for perfection rather than pleasure. Adler argued that individuals could creatively act upon their genetic inheritance and environmental experiences to shape their own lives, emphasizing conscious motivation over unconscious...
Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...

Summary

Social class and substance use problems show a U-shaped link in young males with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Those at the highest and lowest socioeconomic levels faced greater risks, unlike controls.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders
  • Addiction Medicine

Background:

  • The link between socioeconomic status (SES) and substance use disorders (SUDs) is complex and not fully understood.
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a known risk factor for SUDs, but its interaction with SES in this context requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between social class and substance use problems in young adult males.
  • To examine whether this association differs between individuals with and without ADHD.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of young adult males, including 69 with ADHD and 78 controls, was assessed.
  • Substance use problems were evaluated using the Drug Use Screening Inventory-Revised (DUSI).
  • Statistical analyses were performed to explore the relationship between SES and DUSI scores.

Main Results:

  • A significant U-shaped association was observed between SES and substance use problems among ADHD subjects.
  • Individuals with ADHD at both the highest and lowest ends of the SES spectrum exhibited elevated risks for substance-related problems.
  • No significant association between SES and substance use problems was found in the control group.

Conclusions:

  • Substance use risk in individuals with ADHD is uniquely influenced by socioeconomic status.
  • Both lower and higher SES may confer vulnerability to substance use problems in young men with ADHD.
  • These findings highlight the need for tailored interventions considering SES in ADHD populations at risk for SUDs.
