Teeth

The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.

Transmigrant mandibular canines are rare dental anomalies. Panoramic radiography is essential for diagnosing these unusual canine positions and guiding treatment decisions based on associated pathology.

Background:

Transmigrant mandibular canines are infrequently encountered dental anomalies.
Understanding their prevalence, patterns, and associated pathologies is crucial for diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the patterns, incidence, and classification of transmigrant mandibular canines.
To identify any associated pathologies with these malpositioned teeth.

Main Methods:

A retrospective cohort study analyzed 4,500 panoramic radiographs.
Data collected included canine status, laterality, patient demographics, and pathologies.

Main Results:

Fifteen patients (6 female, 9 male) presented with transmigrant mandibular canines.
All cases were unilateral; two canines were associated with cystic lesions, while others showed intraosseous travel without pathology.

Conclusions:

Panoramic radiography is vital for detecting transmigrant mandibular canines.
Treatment involves observation for asymptomatic cases and removal if pathology is present.
