Summary

Perfluorocarbon-perfused vitrectomy (PCPV) with a 25-gauge system is feasible for complex retinal detachments. This technique facilitates surgical maneuvers and achieves high retinal reattachment rates with improved vision.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Surgery

Background:

  • Complicated retinal detachments present surgical challenges.
  • Standard 25-gauge vitrectomy may be limited in these complex cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of perfluorocarbon-perfused vitrectomy (PCPV) using a 25-gauge system.
  • To assess PCPV in patients with complicated retinal detachments.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 13 patients with complicated retinal detachments.
  • Vitrectomy was performed using 25-gauge ports and perfluorocarbon perfusion.
  • Surgical parameters including time, perfluorocarbon liquid volume, instrument bending, and maneuver feasibility were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Mean vitrectomy time was 10.3 minutes; mean perfluorocarbon liquid volume was 24.38 mL.
  • No instrument bending occurred, and all surgical maneuvers were feasible and facilitated by perfluorocarbon liquid.
  • Retinal reattachment was achieved in all cases, with 76.9% of eyes showing improved visual acuity.

Conclusions:

  • Perfluorocarbon-perfused vitrectomy (PCPV) using a 25-gauge system is a viable option for complicated retinal detachments.
  • The technique allows for effective surgical manipulation and successful anatomical and visual outcomes.
