To explore the trainer's role as a positive model for VDPs.
To identify expertise attributes for guiding novice trainers.

A 12-month longitudinal study in Southeast England.
35 Vocational Dental Practitioners (VDPs) and their trainers participated.
Semi-structured interviews and observations were conducted.

Main Results:

Trainer expertise significantly shapes the VT experience.
VDPs perceive trainers as important role models.
Specific attributes of expertise were identified for new trainers.

Conclusions:

Trainer expertise is a critical element in successful VT.
