The Swing Equation01:21

The Swing Equation

The Swing Equation is a fundamental tool in power system dynamics, especially for analyzing the behavior of generating units like three-phase synchronous generators. This equation emerges from applying Newton's second law to the rotor of a generator, encompassing factors such as inertia, angular acceleration, and the interplay between mechanical and electrical torques.
In a steady-state operation, the mechanical torque (Τm) supplied to the generator is balanced by the electrical torque (Τe)...
Elevation of Intermediate Points on Vertical Curves01:20

Elevation of Intermediate Points on Vertical Curves

Vertical curves are essential in roadway design because they provide smooth transitions between varying roadway grades. Designing vertical curves involves calculating intermediate elevations and identifying the curve's highest or lowest point, which is essential for optimal roadway performance.Intermediate elevations on a vertical curve are determined using the tangent offset method. This method considers the initial elevation at the start of the curve, the grades, and the curve's geometry. The...
Muscle Coordination and Action01:24

Muscle Coordination and Action

Muscle coordination is a complex and finely tuned process essential for smooth and purposeful movements like flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, and rotation. The human body orchestrates the actions of various muscles working in concert, each with a specific role. Four functional types describe how muscles work together: agonist, antagonist, synergist, and fixator.
Agonists
Agonist muscles, often called prime movers, are the primary muscles responsible for producing a specific movement.
Development of the Limb Synovial Joints01:07

Development of the Limb Synovial Joints

Joints form during embryonic development in conjunction with the formation and growth of the associated bones. The embryonic tissue that gives rise to all bones, cartilage, and connective tissues of the body is called mesenchyme.
The mesenchymal stem cells differentiate into chondrocytes that form the hyaline cartilage, and later the cartilaginous model of the bone. This model further transforms into a bone. This process is known as endochondral ossification.
During development, the limbs...
Method of Joints: Problem Solving II01:30

Method of Joints: Problem Solving II

Consider a truss structure with frictionless joints fixed to a wall and roller support. If a force of 150 N is applied to joint A, the forces in each member of the truss can be determined using the method of joints.
Torsional Pendulum01:09

Torsional Pendulum

A torsional pendulum involves the oscillation of a rigid body in which the restoring force is provided by the torsion in the string from which the rigid body is suspended. Ideally, the string should be massless; practically, its mass is much smaller than the rigid body's mass and is neglected.
As long as the rigid body's angular displacement is small, its oscillation can be modeled as a linear angular oscillation. The amplitude of the oscillation is an angle. The role of mass is played by the...

Summary

This study identified the most effective skill progressions for the men's artistic gymnastics high bar longswing. The looped bar longswing and layaway swing down demonstrated the highest similarity in inter-segmental coordination.

Area of Science:

  • Sports Science
  • Biomechanics
  • Gymnastics Performance Analysis

Background:

  • The longswing is a fundamental skill in men's artistic gymnastics.
  • Previous research established methods to rank skill progressions based on angular kinematics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify inter-segmental coordination similarities between high bar longswing progressions and the actual longswing.
  • To rank gymnastics skill progressions based on their coordination profile similarity to the longswing.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized 2D direct linear transformation on video data of elite gymnasts performing the longswing and eight progressions.
  • Assessed inter-segmental coordination (hip and shoulder joints) using continuous relative phase analysis.
  • Calculated a "specificity score" combining difference and variability scores to rank progressions.

Main Results:

  • The looped bar longswing (9% specificity) and layaway swing down (10% specificity) were the most similar progressions to the high bar longswing.
  • The looped bar "no action" longswing (51%) and pendulum swing (63%) were the least similar progressions.
  • Ranked progressions provide a quantitative measure of skill similarity.

Conclusions:

  • Ranking skill progressions by specificity score offers a mechanism to identify effective learning pathways for the high bar longswing.
  • This approach aids coaches in establishing efficient training programs by highlighting progressions with similar coordination patterns.
