The role of the light-dark cycle and melatonin in stroke outcome
Abstract:
Recent work in experimental animals led us to formulate the hypothesis that the outcome of stroke is worse if it occurs during the day than during the night. This article describes the evidence in support of our proposal and explains that, although testing our concept in experimental animals is feasible because the characteristics of experimental strokes are uniform, the ultimate test will be in a clinical setting. The confirmation of this hypothesis may have far-reaching consequences for the treatment of stroke patients.
