Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Background:

Sensory processing (SP) difficulties are prevalent in up to 95% of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Limited research exists on specific SP patterns within the autistic population.
The relationship between SP and core/secondary symptoms of ASD requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate specific sensory processing (SP) patterns in children diagnosed with autistic disorder (AD).
To examine the correlation between identified SP patterns and the social, emotional, and behavioral responsiveness of these children.

Main Methods:

Utilized a caregiver questionnaire to gather data on sensory processing in children with autistic disorder (AD).
Correlated the findings on SP patterns with measures of social, emotional, and behavioral responsiveness.

Main Results:

Identified distinct sensory processing (SP) patterns within the studied sample of children with autistic disorder (AD).
Found significant relationships between specific SP patterns and social, emotional, and behavioral functioning.

Conclusions:

Children with autistic disorder (AD) exhibit identifiable sensory processing (SP) patterns.
