Summary

Failed total ankle replacement can be successfully converted to arthrodesis using bone grafting and internal fixation. This surgical technique achieves high fusion rates in patients with degenerative arthritis, improving function and satisfaction.

Autologous Microfractured and Purified Adipose Tissue for Arthroscopic Management of Osteochondral Lesions of the Talus

  • Tricortical autograft from the iliac crest used to maintain ankle and hindfoot alignment.
  • Internal fixation employed for stabilization, with subsequent analysis of fusion and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scores.
  • Main Results:

    • Successful arthrodesis achieved in 15 out of 16 patients within a mean of three months.
    • One patient with rheumatoid arthritis and severe bone loss experienced nonunion, requiring revision surgery.
    • Post-operative AOFAS scores improved significantly, with high patient satisfaction reported.

    Conclusions:

    • Arthrodesis with tricortical iliac crest autograft and internal fixation is a reliable salvage procedure for failed total ankle replacement in degenerative arthritis.
