Area of Science:

  • Environmental Chemistry
  • Polymer Science
  • Analytical Chemistry

Background:

  • Silicone rubber sheeting serves as a passive sampling device for hydrophobic organic contaminants.
  • Accurate sampler-water partition coefficients are crucial for determining sampling rates and contaminant concentrations in water and sediment pore water.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate log partition coefficients (logK(sr,w)) for silicone rubber-water for various hydrophobic organic contaminants.
  • To assess the relationship between silicone rubber-water partition coefficients and octanol-water partition coefficients (logK(ow)).

Main Methods:

  • The cosolvent method, utilizing methanol, was employed to estimate logK(sr,w) for 32 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 2 deuterated PAH analogues, and 32 chlorobiphenyls (CBs).
  • Statistical analysis was performed to establish linear relationships between logK(sr,w) and logK(ow).

Main Results:

  • Strong linear relationships were observed between logK(sr,w) and logK(ow) for both CBs and PAHs.
  • These findings indicate that the hydrophobicity of compounds strongly dictates their partitioning into silicone rubber.
  • Absorption was identified as the primary mechanism for analyte accumulation in the silicone rubber polymer.

Conclusions:

  • LogK(ow) is a reliable predictor of logK(sr,w) for hydrophobic organic contaminants in silicone rubber.
  • Silicone rubber sheeting is a validated passive sampling device for environmental monitoring of these contaminants.
  • The study confirms the utility of silicone rubber in assessing bioavailable contaminant concentrations.
