Brush cytology as a diagnostic aid for bronchogenic carcinoma

The results of 125 bronchoscopies were reviewed and analysed with particular emphasis on bronchial brushing. In the patients with a visible endobronchial growth, yield for malignancy was 76.6%, while 2.9% each showed evidence of adenoma and dysplasia. In the patients with no visible growth, the yield was 25% without fluoroscopic guidance. There were no major complications.
