Summary

Anterior intermeniscal ligaments, both membranous and cord-like, contain neural mechanoreceptors like Ruffini corpuscles. These findings suggest a role in knee proprioception and structural integrity.

Non-Invasive Compression-Induced Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury and In Vivo Imaging of Protease Activity in Mice

  • Ligaments comprised parallel collagen fibrils, synovial tissue, vascularized connective tissue, fibroblasts, and nerve endings.
  • TEM confirmed the presence of Ruffini corpuscles, indicating neural mechanoreceptors.

Conclusions:

  • AIMLs contain neural mechanoreceptors (Ruffini corpuscles), suggesting a role in knee proprioception and structural function.
  • Preservation of AIMLs during meniscal surgery may be important for maintaining knee function.
