Summary

This case study highlights a rare form of neuroblastoma with an indolent clinical course, characterized by skin nodules and long-term stability without intensive treatment. The term "chronic neuroblastoma" is proposed for such cases.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Cancer Biology

Background:

  • Neuroblastoma exhibits diverse clinical presentations influenced by histology, biology, and clinical features.
  • Early diagnosis often relies on histological examination and elevated urinary markers.

Observation:

  • A 4-month-old male presented with an abdominal mass and multiple subcutaneous nodules.
  • The patient remained clinically stable for 15 years with progressing and regressing subcutaneous metastases.
  • No cytostatic treatment was administered for the initial 9 years; cis-retinoic acid later showed no significant impact.

Findings:

  • Subcutaneous nodules are indicative of an indolent disease course in neuroblastoma.
  • The patient maintained good clinical condition over a 15-year observation period.
  • Complete remission was not achieved, despite the long-term indolent progression.

Implications:

  • The term "chronic neuroblastoma" is suggested for patients with a prolonged, indolent disease course without complete remission.
  • This case underscores the importance of recognizing varied neuroblastoma behaviors beyond aggressive presentations.
  • Long-term observation may be crucial for managing neuroblastoma with indolent characteristics.
