Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Summary

The Norwegian Function Assessment Scale (NFAS) demonstrates acceptable test-retest reliability and provides valuable population-based normative data for functional ability. This research supports the development of national standards for interpreting functional assessment scores.

Background:

  • This study addresses the need by assessing the Norwegian Function Assessment Scale (NFAS).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the reliability of the Norwegian Function Assessment Scale (NFAS).
  • To establish normative population data for functional ability using the NFAS.
  • To provide a basis for national norm development and score interpretation.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a postal questionnaire including the NFAS administered to seven birth cohorts in Ullensaker municipality (2004).
  • NFAS comprises 39 items from the ICF activities/participation component, analyzed via principal component analysis into seven domains.
  • Assessed internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) and two-week test-retest reliability (agreement, kappa, ICC).

Main Results:

  • Achieved a response rate of 54% (1620 participants) and 75.4% for retest (101 participants).
  • Demonstrated acceptable test-retest reliability with kappa values from 0.38-0.83 and ICC from 0.79-0.83.
  • Identified higher reported functional problems in females, older individuals, and those with lower education levels, particularly in physical domains.

Conclusions:
