Variation: Normal Distribution, Range, and Standard Deviation02:32

Variation: Normal Distribution, Range, and Standard Deviation

In the field of psychology, there are several ways to organize measurements of a trait, feature, or characteristic (i.e., variables). Qualitative data, such as ethnicity, can be tabulated into a frequency count to provide information about the proportion, as well as the variety of groups in a sample or population. On the other hand, researchers can perform a wider set of calculations on quantitative data. The mean, mode, and median, for instance, are central tendency measures to identify a...

Assessment of Airway, Skin Color, and Use of Accessory Muscles

A thorough assessment of respiratory health is paramount in clinical settings to identify and manage respiratory distress and ensure adequate oxygenation. This article elaborates on the critical aspects of respiratory evaluation, including airway assessment, skin color examination, and the observation of accessory muscle use, which are integral to effectively diagnosing and managing patients with respiratory conditions.
Introduction
The initial evaluation of a patient's respiratory system...

Drug Dosing: Obese Patients

In the United States, obesity is a prominent concern. It is linked to heightened mortality rates due to increased occurrences of conditions such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and diabetes compared to nonobese individuals. A patient is classified as obese if their actual body weight surpasses the ideal or desirable body weight by 20%, based on Metropolitan Life Insurance Company data. Ideal body weights consider average weights and heights for males and females...
Bias in Epidemiological Studies01:29

Bias in Epidemiological Studies

Biases can arise at various stages of research, from study design and data collection to analysis and interpretation. Recognizing and addressing these biases is essential to ensure the validity and reliability of epidemiological findings.Broadly speaking, biases in epidemiology fall into three main categories: selection bias, information bias, and confounding. A more detailed description of possible biases is:
Changes in the Appendicular Skeleton with Age01:09

Changes in the Appendicular Skeleton with Age

The upper and lower limb initially develops as a small bulge called a limb bud, which appears on the lateral side of the early embryo. The upper limb bud appears near the end of the fourth week of development, with the lower limb bud appearing shortly after.
Initially, the limb buds consist of a core of mesenchyme covered by a layer of ectoderm. The ectoderm at the end of the limb bud thickens to form a narrow crest called the apical ectodermal ridge. This ridge stimulates the underlying...

Summary

Childhood obesity is a growing concern in the Caribbean. This study found Tobagonian females have higher body fat and BMI than US peers, while males show comparable growth patterns.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Pediatrics
  • Anthropometry

Background:

  • Childhood and adolescent obesity presents a significant public health challenge in the Caribbean region.
  • Understanding growth patterns is crucial for addressing this issue effectively.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze growth patterns in Afro-Caribbean adolescents aged 12-18 years.
  • To compare these growth patterns with established data for US adolescents.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study measured weight, height, and percentage body fat (% BF) in 3,707 adolescents.
  • Standardized procedures and a bioelectric impedance analyzer were used.
  • Age- and gender-specific percentiles of BMI, %BF, weight, and height were derived and compared with US data.

Main Results:

  • Strong correlations between BMI and %BF were observed in both genders (males: 0.75-0.87; females: 0.79-0.87).
  • Females consistently exhibited higher %BF than males across all age groups.
  • Tobagonian females showed higher weight and BMI compared to US counterparts, particularly above median percentiles.
  • Tobagonian males displayed similar height, weight, and BMI to US males.

Conclusions:

  • The growth patterns in Tobagonian adolescents are comparable to those in more well-nourished populations.
  • Differences in body composition, especially among females, warrant further investigation in the context of Caribbean public health.
  • The findings highlight the need for tailored public health strategies to address obesity in this demographic.
