Summary

A large retroperitoneal liposarcoma was surgically removed from a 64-year-old female patient. Pathological examination confirmed dedifferentiated liposarcoma with distinct lipoma and sarcomatoid tissue patterns.

Background:

Liposarcomas are malignant tumors arising from fat cells, often found in the retroperitoneum.
Retroperitoneal masses can present with vague symptoms like flank pain, making diagnosis challenging.

Observation:

A 64-year-old female presented with left flank pain.
Imaging revealed a large (12 cm) solid retroperitoneal mass with significant fatty components.
Initial diagnosis suggested retroperitoneal liposarcoma.

Findings:

Surgical resection of the mass and left kidney was performed.
Pathological examination confirmed dedifferentiated liposarcoma.
The tumor exhibited distinct areas of well-differentiated lipoma and dedifferentiated fibrotic sarcomatoid tissue.
