Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of automated electrogustometry as a clinical screening method for taste disturbance.
  • To determine the sensitivity and specificity of electrogustometry in identifying abnormal taste function.

Main Methods:

  • 114 subjects, including healthy individuals and those with potential taste-affecting medical conditions, participated.
  • Subjects rated overall taste ability (0-10 scale). Aberrant tasters had taste-related symptoms and rated taste ≤5.
  • Automated electrogustometry thresholds and visual analogue scale (VAS) intensity ratings for four basic tastes were recorded. A VAS score of 50 was the cutoff for 'poor tasters'.

Main Results:

  • The study found that electrogustometry exhibited low sensitivity and specificity.
  • These low metrics indicate a limited ability to accurately identify individuals with abnormal taste function.

Conclusions:

  • Automated electrogustometry is not recommended as a clinical screening method for taste disturbance.
  • Its diagnostic performance in populations with potential taste alterations is insufficient for screening purposes.
