Aging worsens neuronal function in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) brain levels decrease with age in TLE patients, correlating with memory deficits, indicating progressive neuronal damage.

  • NAA in left lateral temporal voxels correlated with verbal memory performance in mTLE patients.

Conclusions:

  • The age-related decrease in lateral temporal NAA in mTLE patients suggests progressive neuronal dysfunction.
  • NAA serves as a marker of neuronal integrity, as evidenced by its correlation with verbal memory.
