Anxiety is linked to higher impulsivity in bipolar disorder (BD) patients. This study found that comorbid anxiety disorders and anxiety symptoms correlate with increased impulsivity in BD.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
Background:
- Impulsivity and anxiety are common in bipolar disorder (BD).
- The link between anxiety and impulsivity in BD requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the association between anxiety and impulsivity in bipolar disorder patients.
Main Methods:
- 114 outpatients with BD were assessed for anxiety and impulsivity using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11).
- Comorbid anxiety disorders and anxiety symptom domains were evaluated.
Main Results:
- Patients with comorbid anxiety disorders showed significantly higher impulsivity.
- Anxiety symptoms across various domains were positively associated with greater impulsivity.
- Baseline anxiety symptoms predicted elevated impulsivity at 9-month follow-up, though less robustly after adjustments.
Conclusions:
- Anxiety is positively associated with impulsivity in bipolar disorder.
- Further research is needed to understand the clinical implications and underlying mechanisms of this association.
