The knee joint is the most complicated joint in the body. It consists of three articulations– two tibiofemoral and one patellofemoral. Background:

Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystemic inflammatory disorder.
Peripheral joint involvement is a common clinical manifestation in BD patients.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate knee involvement in Italian Behçet's disease patients using ultrasound (US).
To assess the utility of US in detecting arthritic signs, bone erosions, and Baker's cysts in BD.

Main Methods:

Knee US was performed on 30 Italian BD patients.
Evaluated for joint effusion, synovial proliferation, bone erosions, and Baker's cysts using a semi-quantitative score.
Assessed disease activity and its correlation with US findings.

Main Results:

60% of BD patients showed knee involvement on US, including synovial proliferation (46%) and joint effusion (46%).
Bone erosions were detected in 10% of patients.
A positive correlation was found between disease activity and US score.

Conclusions:

Peripheral joint involvement is a significant clinical feature in Italian BD patients.
Ultrasound is a valuable tool for detecting knee involvement in Behçet's disease.
