Knee Joint

The knee joint is the most complicated joint in the body. It consists of three articulations– two tibiofemoral and one patellofemoral. As is characteristic of synovial joints, the knee joint has a thin articular capsule that partially surrounds this joint cavity. Background:

  • Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystemic inflammatory disorder.
  • Peripheral joint involvement is a common clinical manifestation in BD patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate knee involvement in Italian Behçet's disease patients using ultrasound (US).
  • To assess the utility of US in detecting arthritic signs, bone erosions, and Baker's cysts in BD.

Main Methods:

  • Knee US was performed on 30 Italian BD patients.
  • Evaluated for joint effusion, synovial proliferation, bone erosions, and Baker's cysts using a semi-quantitative score.
  • Assessed disease activity and its correlation with US findings.

Main Results:

  • 60% of BD patients showed knee involvement on US, including synovial proliferation (46%) and joint effusion (46%).
  • Bone erosions were detected in 10% of patients.
  • A positive correlation was found between disease activity and US score.

Conclusions:

  • Peripheral joint involvement is a significant clinical feature in Italian BD patients.
  • Ultrasound is a valuable tool for detecting knee involvement in Behçet's disease.
