Summary
A rare melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy in a neonate's maxilla recurred after initial surgery. Wide excision successfully removed the tumor, with no recurrence at six months.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Oncology
- Oral Pathology
Background:
- Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, benign, but locally aggressive neoplasm.
- MNTI most commonly affects the maxilla in neonates and infants.
Observation:
- A case of MNTI in the maxilla of a 13-day-old neonate is presented.
- Diagnosis was confirmed by computed tomography and histopathology.
- Initial treatment involved submucosal excision at 30 days old.
Findings:
- Tumor recurrence was observed three weeks post-excision.
- A second, wide surgical excision was performed.
- The patient showed no recurrence at a 6-month follow-up.
Implications:
- Incomplete tumor removal and potential surgical stimulation may contribute to MNTI recurrence.
- Wide surgical excision appears effective for managing recurrent MNTI.
- Early diagnosis and appropriate surgical intervention are crucial for favorable outcomes in MNTI cases.
