Summary

Robotic surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System enabled safe and successful harvesting of the internal thoracic artery (ITA) for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). This minimally invasive approach resulted in excellent graft patency and no mortality in 10 patients.

Main Results:

  • All 10 ITAs were successfully harvested in a skeletonized fashion with a robotic harvesting time of 38.8 +/- 25.2 minutes.
  • The average length of the harvested ITA was 16.2 +/- 3.1 cm.
  • No mortality occurred, and the postoperative patency rate of all grafts was 100%.

Conclusions:

  • The da Vinci Surgical System offers high-resolution stereoscopic imaging and precise instrument control for endoscopic procedures.
  • Computer-enhanced ITA harvesting using the da Vinci Surgical System is a safe and effective technique with excellent outcomes.
